JR Shumate
JR started Ohio Future Basketball in 2016.
JR is a father of seven. Three adopted, and four biological children. His 3 oldest are boys. One is working as an accountant, and the other works for the government. His third oldest son is playing professional basketball in Europe after playing in the NBA Summer League with the Toronto Raptors. He has three daughters in college, two are playing D1 basketball (Kent State and Ohio State). His youngest daughter is a freshman in high school. She cheers and runs track. His wife, Kari, is an elementary teacher. JR spent 15 years teaching and is now in his 13th year as an administrator. He is presently an Assistant Principal at Newark HS. He coached boy’s HS basketball for 13 years, and girl’s HS basketball for 13 years. His most recent HS coaching stint was 13 years as Newark girls basketball coach. His last 7 years brought 7 district championships, 6 league championships and 4 final 4 appearances. Half of Newark’s alumni over his last 10 years played college basketball. The National average is less than 5%. In Ohio Future’s first graduating class the organization had four D1 full scholarships and three D2 full scholarships in 2019. |
